Erté’s ‘Der Rosenkavalier’ Props

April 2019

This particular project allowed me to carry forward my interest in prop-costume in a way that allowed me to mix both the more typical construction techniques and the more 3D elements into one costume.

The gold button details and sabre hilt are all designed and 3D printed by myself using Autodesk’s Fusion360 and Maya to replicate the two-headed eagle of the hat.

The eagles on the hat and belt buckles were created using scrap filament from the 3D printer, by using a 3D printing pen. This worked effectively to create the details on the buckle and get the correct curve around the hat so it sits smoothly on the finished item.

The sabre, scabbard and belt are also completely made from scratch by myself. The sabre is made of MDF and encased in two halves of a 3D printed hilt. The scabbard is plywood routed out, varnished and polished up to match the design. I used brass fixtures to ensure any metal/metal-look items are cohesive.
